According to a report coming from TelecomTalk website, Jio has already started testing VoWi-Fi service in some circles. Jio is yet to reveal official details about its VoWi-Fi calling service.

The report suggests that the Jio’s VoWi-Fi service is already available in three areas: Kerala, Kolkata and Maharashtra. Jio is reportedly testing its Wi-Fi calling service in these three circles, which means select users from these areas are already using Jio’s VoWi-Fi facility on their smartphones.

VoWi-Fi Features: How Will it Work?

In case you have got your hands on a OnePlus 7T smartphone, and you happen to have an Airtel 4G SIM on this phone, then you should definitely give a shot to this service to test it out. To do that, you will have to go to an area where the service is being tested right now. When you are in the proximity of a Wi-Fi network which allows you to make calls over the network, you will be able to see an icon which denotes the VoWi-Fi service. The VoWi-Fi icon would be visible near the signal indicators in the Quick Settings toggles. You will also be able to select which form of calling you would like to prioritise, Voice over Cellular Network and VoWi-Fi.

If you choose the latter option, then you would be able to see the text “Calling via WiFi call airtel”, when you make a call. In case you are moving through the network and you happen to stir beyond the Wi-Fi network, then the call will be carried over to the VoLTE network without a drop in the call. It is also worth noting that when you are using Wi-Fi for different purposes and taking too much bandwidth, then the VoWi-Fi icon will disappear signalling that the VoWi-Fi service is not available right now.

Airtel Testing VoWi-Fi on iPhone

Also, it is interesting to note that OnePlus 7T is not the only device on which Bharti Airtel is testing the VoWi-Fi service, but the telecom operator has been seen testing it on iPhone as well. On iPhone as the option is available a toggle which can be turned on or off.

Compatible devices

Similar to Airtel’s Wi-Fi calling service, the Jio VoWi-Fi is also said to be available for some compatible devices like iPhone 6s and above, Xiaomi Redmi K20, Redmi K20 Pro, POCO F1, Samsung Galaxy J6, Galaxy A10s, Galaxy S10, Galaxy S10+, Galaxy S10e, Galaxy On6, Galaxy M30s, OnePlus 6 series, and OnePlus 7 Series including OnePlus 7, 7 Pro, 7T and 7T Pro. Airtel previously confirmed that it is working with all leading smartphone brands to roll out compatibility with its Wi-Fi Calling.

The Airtel Wi-Fi calling service is currently available in select circles including Delhi NCR, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Mumbai and Kolkata. The telecom operator has confirmed that the Wi-Fi calling service will be gradually rolled out across other states in India.
